Checking Yourself For Melanoma

Published by Daniela on 31st Jul 2020

May is “Melanoma Awareness Month” and Hampton Sun® is here to help you become better educated on skin cancer and how to best protect yourself.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but when detected early, it is almost always curable. Early detection is important, and identifying a melanoma is as easy as A-B-C. Keep an eye on your moles and spots and remember to look for signs that spell out the ABC’s. The A-B-C-D-E Rule provides clear and simple guidelines to help you better protect yourself with early detection, and to help remind you when to plan your next visit to the dermatologist.

Unlike other types of cancers, melanoma cannot easily hide because it causes physical changes to the skin which are visible. The A-B-C-D-E Rule is based on 5 physical signs of potential melanoma:

A - Asymmetry: Two halves of a mole or spot that do not match.

B - Border: A mole or spot that has irregular or blurred edges.

C - Color: A pink, red, white, or blue colored mole or spot.

D - Diameter: A mole or spot that is larger than ¼ inch or 6 millimeters.

E - Evolving: A change in size of a mole or spot.
